HOW DO I BECOME A FOSTER PARENT FOR PETS AT THE SHELTER?

1.Read the requirements in the image below. Consider reaching out to an animal rescue organization near you if you do not meet the foster parent requirements at our shelter.

Foster Program Requirements

2. Select a pet to foster. You can look on our website, walk through our kennels, or let us know what kind of pet you are interested in fostering. Pets with extreme medical or behavior problems are not eligible for the foster program. You can email us at [email protected] to get more information about a specific pet at the shelter or if you need help selecting a foster pet. If you would like to receive email notifications about pets that need foster homes please fill out this Google Form

3. Meet your potential foster pet at the shelter. We are open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 4pm for meet and greets with adoptable pets. The front office will need the pet's animal ID number (A######) to set up a meet and greet in one of our play yards.

4. Sign a Foster Agreement. If the meeting goes well, you can ask the front office to become their foster parent. You will need to have your government ID with you to complete the foster agreement.

5. Take your foster pet home. Let staff know if you need supplies. Please keep a copy of your foster paperwork in a safe place for your reference. We require that you quarantine your foster pet away from other animals or at-risk individuals for at least 3 days but ideally 14 days. We are unable to guarantee complete health in any of our animals. Some illnesses take days to weeks to develop obvious symptoms. Your own pets must be fully vaccinated before you foster an animal from the shelter. In addition to initial vaccines, most Veterinarians recommend vaccine booster shots every 1 to 3 years. If you are not sure if your own pets are fully vaccinated, ask your veterinarian! Contact staff if you notice a medical or behavior issue with your foster pet. You must contact staff to set up a medical examination. Medical treatments without staff approval are nonrefundable to foster parents.

6. Help them get adopted! Let people know that your foster pet is looking for an adopter. You can print flyers, post them on social media or pet adoption websites, and put on an adopt me bandana when your foster pet is in public areas. We will also invite you to attend some of our adoption events, so check your email often to accept those invitations. We require that people meet the pet that they are interested in adopting. If you find someone interested in meeting your foster pet you can set up the meeting yourself or you can contact us to have the meeting at the shelter. If you find an adopter, let us know and send them to fill out adoption paperwork at the shelter. Your foster pet will be visible on our website until an adopter is found. If someone contacts the shelter and is interested in meeting your foster pet, we will contact you to set up a meeting at the shelter. Currently, our adoption fees are $25 and include microchip insertion, initial vaccines, and spay or neuter surgery. Foster Parents will have priority if they decide to adopt or find an adopter for the foster pet.
