What is the City of San Bernardino Youth Civic Engagement Council?

The City of San Bernardino Youth Civic Engagement Council ("Youth Council") is a program for motivated high school students who are eager to learn more about the City they live in and the local government that runs it! The Youth Council provides San Bernardino youth with the opportunity to engage with City staff and elected officials to learn more about their roles in running local government. Additionally, youth will learn about the various ways they can engage civically to make a difference in their community.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be enrolled in good standing as a sophomore or junior at either a SBCUSD high school or a charter school in San Bernardino at the time of application.
  • Applicants must reside in San Bernardino.
  • Applicants must be available to participate for the entirety of the program from August to May (a minimum of about four hours each month).

If Selected, Participants Will Have the Following Opportunities & Responsibilities:

There will be nine mandatory events throughout the program, which will occur once a month (meetings or local field trips). These events will allow members the opportunity to shadow City staff and elected officials and participate in activities to learn about the daily functions of the City. Members will also have the opportunity to share with City staff, local leaders, and elected officials what the youth experience is in San Bernardino.
