Community members were excited to try out the newest addition to Blair Park, an innovative seven station outdoor Fitness Court to encourage wellness, at a ribbon cutting held on Wednesday, November 9. Students from Cal State San Bernardino's Kinesiology Department were just as excited to demonstrate the equipment.
The Mayor and City Council members, City Parks and Arts Commissioners, the Blair Park Neighborhood Association, and representatives from Assemblymember James Ramos and San Manuel joined community members at the ceremony.
"I spent much of my time growing up right here at Blair Park," said Council Member Ben Reynoso. "One of my best friends lived just two doors down that street."
The Fitness Court at Blair Park allows users to leverage their own body weight to get a complete workout using a station-to station format. Adaptable for people at all fitness levels, the National Fitness Campaign developed the Fitness Court concept in 2012 to inspire municipalities to transform public spaces into community fitness hubs.
San Bernardino was selected to receive a $30,000 grant from NFC to help support the construction of the court, along with additional funding from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and the California Parks and Recreation Society.
“We are beyond excited to have this innovative option for fitness in San Bernardino,” said City Parks and Recreation Director Lydie Gutfeld. “This is a great opportunity for families to come out, enjoy the park, and start their journeys into improving their physical fitness.”
One feature of the Blair Park Fitness Court that impressed the attendees was the locally inspired 10’x30’ mural and artwork representing San Bernardino’s history and culture by local artist Darren Villegas. Villegas was selected earlier this year by the City Arts and Historical Preservation Commission as part of a competition to select a local artist for the Fitness Court.
Blair Park is located at 1466 West Marshall Boulevard, San Bernardino, CA 92405.
