Project Update: Construction Activity

Back Underway on Mt. Vernon Bridge

The San Bernardino County Transportation Agency (SBCTA) has announced that work on the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge Project is back underway following a delay while Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) relocated a building in their yard and performed work to realign some of the rail lines to maintain their operations during bridge reconstruction efforts.

The Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge project was staged so that bridge work would be suspended while the BNSF work was taking place. With BNSF's work completed, SBCTA and their contractor, Traylor Granite Joint Venture (TGJV), have resumed their construction activities.

Over the next few weeks, there will be increased activity in the area, including utility work near 2nd Street and Mt. Vernon and construction activity on the frontage road adjacent to the bridge between 2nd and 3rd Streets. Flaggers will be on-site intermittently to help direct traffic around the work area. Work is anticipated to take place Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

SBCTA is working diligently to reconstruct the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge and reconnect the southern and northern sections of West San Bernardino as soon as possible. The new bridge will be completed and open to the public in 2025.

In the meantime, SBCTA and Omnitrans have partnered to provide a free bus service to the community while the bridge is under construction. The service provides hundreds of trips every month and is free while the project is underway.

Lastly, SBCTA has partnered with local businesses to create a bilingual business brochure and interactive map to highlight and support local businesses, many of whom have been impacted by the bridge’s closure.
