The San Bernardino Public Library is celebrating National Library Card Sign-Up and Literacy Month in September and is encouraging everyone to sign up a for a new library card.

Every September since 1987, Library Card Sign-up and Literacy Month has been held to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the American Library Association (ALA) and its partner libraries unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card. This year, everyone who signs up for a new card in September will receive a free book.

Patrons can visit one of the four San Bernardino Public Libraries in person to sign-up for a regular library card or virtually at www.sbpl.org to sign up for a digital library card to utilize online resources.

Signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning. Public librarians and library staff help parents and caregivers save hundreds of dollars on educational resources and services for students. From free access to programs/activities, educational apps, in-person and virtual homework help, technology workshops to the expertise of librarians, a library card is one of the most cost-effective back-to-school supplies available.

In recent years, the library has expanded the number of online services and programs available to cardholders. Among the resources available via its website are Overdrive eBooks and eAudiobooks and Brainfuse Live Homework Help offering expert assistance for learners of all ages via chat almost every day of the year from 1:00 pm to 10:00 p.m.

The library offers literacy tutoring to adults, children, and families through the Jack L. Hill Lifelong Learning Center, located on the second floor of the Feldheym Library.

More information about library services is available by calling 909-381-8201 or by visiting www.sbpl.org.
