Residents Urged to Stay Home
or use Extreme Caution When Driving
Over the past 24 hours the City of San Bernardino has experienced unprecedented weather conditions. Snow along with rain showers has been falling in the City and the region including lower elevations.
Residents should exercise extreme caution by driving slowly or avoid driving at all.
While road (pavement temperatures) are generally 10 to 20 degrees higher than our air temps, bridges and overpasses may see some ice. A more probable concern is slush on roads.
This means we will not likely see frozen roads that would require snow plowing or salt (deicing) unless you live in the much higher elevations outside of our city limits. Snow on pavement will melt relatively quickly.
Crews have been working today since 7am to ensure there are no hazards on roads, ensure warning signs remain posted, and continue clearing known flooded areas (those that can be cleared).
In the unlikely event that temperatures drop significantly overnight, and roads start to freeze over, there is unfortunately not much that can be done as the effort would require an unprecedented number of snowplows, trained snowplow operators, and related anti-icing chemicals and road salt which are not available to the City or our partners at the County. The current forecast is calling for a low of 38 degrees overnight with temperatures rising up to the 40s tomorrow.
Public Works crews are also in direct contact with PD (Dispatch) for any issues that may require our immediate attention.
If you become aware of a dangerous road condition, please call the San Bernardino Police Department at 909-383-5311.
