Animal Services

On December 18th, 2024 our shelter will be opening at 12:00 PM, with kennel walkthroughs starting at 1:00 PM. For emergencies, please contact the City of San Bernardino Police Department at 909-383-5311. Thank you for your understanding.

Important Parking Notice: Starting Monday, December 9th, our parking lot will be temporarily closed for 1-2 weeks due to construction.

Temporary parking instructions: Visitors may park in the Water Department parking lots, located on both the left and right sides of our shelter. Signs and traffic cones will guide you to walk safely into our parking lot to access our Customer Service Lobby and our kennels for public viewing. As a reminder, parking in our lot will not be allowed during this time.  Thank you for your understanding as we make these improvements.

SHELTER SERVICES

  1. The shelter is open to visitors between the hours of 11:00am to 4:00pm, Monday-Sunday, 7 days a week. The shelter will accommodate visitors for adoptions, redemptions, and licensing on a first come, first served basis.

  2. We provide $25 microchipping services for our residents during business hours.

  3. We are not accepting healthy stray cats at this time, but we will continue to accept sick or injured stray cats, along with abandoned underage kittens. If you need assistance with cats in your neighborhood, please contact the rescue groups listed on the graphic below.

  4. Due to an increase in the number of dogs at our shelter, we are currently not accepting owner-surrendered dogs. However, we prioritize accepting animals with a documented history of aggression to ensure public safety, and we will accept adoption returns within 45 days post-adoption from City Residents and any of our Contracting Cities. For other situations, including adoption returns after 45 days, acceptance is at the discretion of our staff based on the reason for surrender and shelter capacity.

We encourage pet owners to explore other options before considering surrender. The Lange Foundation at (909) 600-0738 or [email protected] may be able to assist with rehoming, vet care, or behavior issues.

  5. We will accept all stray dogs from the City of San Bernardino, Colton, Grand Terrace, Fontana, Loma Linda, or Rialto but ask that residents check with their neighbors to see if they've lost their pet prior to contacting us or bringing the pet to the shelter. Most lost pets are only about a mile away from their home. Studies show that pets are more likely to be reunited with their owners when they stay in the communities where they were found.  Social media tools like Facebook, NextDoor and applications like Finding Rover are free to use and can help you get the dog home quickly without a trip to the shelter.

  6.  If you are able to, please pay your pet's license by mail, phone or pay your pet's license online on Docupet.

  7. If you would like to pay for your fine or citation, please attempt to pay via mail or phone. If you need to pay your fine in-person, please contact us at (909)-998-4000.

FIELD SERVICES

1. Animal Control Officers will continue to respond to calls for service which pose a hazard to the public, injured, and deceased animals as well as all other calls, including nuisance complaints.

2. If you have a stray dog and are comfortable bringing it to the shelter, please bring them in if you were not able to locate their owner. If you are unable to bring the animal to the shelter, place a call for service.

3. Animal Control Officers will not impound any stray healthy cats.

Please call at (909) 998-4000 for any other questions
